16M+ views on TikTok — the most-viewed video in the history of 8 News Now’s social platforms.

My station was the first to report this story. While monitoring social media, I quickly identified a video circulating on Facebook related to the breaking news. I reached out directly to the person who filmed it to secure permission for broadcast and digital use. After obtaining approval, I produced and edited a short-form version optimized for social platforms. The video quickly gained traction, ultimately reaching over 16 million views on TikTok and becoming the station’s most successful social post.
Social video explainer featuring a geologist from University of Nevada, Las Vegas on why climbing wet sandstone at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area can be dangerous.
I produced this short-form explainer while working with the digital team at 8 News Now to break down why climbing wet sandstone at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area can be dangerous—even when the rock appears dry.
Because Las Vegas attracts thousands of climbers each year to Red Rock’s world-famous sandstone cliffs, I saw an opportunity to publish the piece during a wet spell in February, when the risk of rock breakage is highest. To help explain the science behind the hazard, I interviewed a geologist from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, who described how moisture weakens sandstone and increases the chance of holds breaking.
For the full story, I also interviewed a Red Rock Search & Rescue volunteer and climbing guide, who shared insight into the real-world consequences of climbing on wet rock.
